GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program is a free and open-source graphics editor used for image retouching, editing, drawing and converting between different image formats and performing special tasks.

History

GIMP was originally released as the General Image Manipulation Program. In 1995, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis began developing GIMP as a semester-project at the University of California, Berkeley for the experimental Computing Facility. In 1996 GIMP was first publicly released.In that following year Richard Stallman visited University of California Berkeley where Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis asked if they could change General to GNU.Richard Stallman approved and the definition of the acronym GIMP was changed to be the GNU Image Manipulation Program. This reflected its new existence as being developed as Free Software as a part of the GNU Project.

Public Review

It is often compared to and suggested as a possible replacement for Adobe Photoshop.GIMP has similar functionality to Photoshop, but has a different kind of user interface.The single-window mode introduced in GIMP 2.8 was reviewed in 2012 by Ryan Paul of "Ars Technica", who noted that it maded the user experience feel like "more streamlined and less cluttered."
In October 2013 review of GIMP for ExtremeTech , David Cardinal noted that GIMP's reputation of being hard to use and lacking features has "changed dramatically over the last couple years", and that it was "no longer a crippled alternative to Photoshop". He described GIMP's scripting way as one of its strengths, but he also mentioned that some of Photoshop's features like Text, 3D commands, Adjustment Layers and History - are maybe less powerful or is missing in GIMP.
Basically GIMP is for using with Linux and for its low cost and occasional use.Photoshop on the other hand is for professional users such as photographers and designers.
