Audacity is one of the most renowned free open-source digital audio editing and recording software application. It is not only available for Windows but also for Mac OS X, Linux & other operating systems as well. Audacity started its journey n the year 1999. It was created at Carnegie Mellon University by Dominic Mazzoni with Roger Dannenberg and finally, it was released on May 28, 2000. The first version was 0.8. On October 10, 2011, it became the most popular software download from SourceForge, with over 76.5 million downloads. Audacity won the SourceForge Community Choice Award in 2007 and 2009 for Best Project for Multimedia.
In addition to audio recording features from different sources, audacity is also capable of post-processing almost all types of audio, as an example, podcasts by adding normalization, trimming, & fading in and out effects. Audacity even has been used to recording and mixing entire albums.

Limitations
This software also has some limitations as it supports only 32-bit or 64-bit audio effect plug-ins and can not support instrument VST (VSTi) plugins. It has no dynamic equalizer controls and real time effects while recording. MIDI files can only be displayed.

To me, Audacity is a wonderful software for a home user. I have been using this software for like 2 years. It has helped me a lot of recording voice for my youtube videos but not only for youtube videos, but it also helps you recording multi-instruments and mixing them.
